The Importance of Goals in Planning Success

What MBA student hasn’t written a 20-page business case analyzing their favorite company, product or service? The business case has long been used (and abused) in business to analyze new product concepts and opportunities.

The problem? Writing a long and meticulous business case can take weeks (or even months), only to see the entire effort shot down by a hallway “go/kill” conversation. Surely, there must be a better way to communicate new concepts and make decisions than wasting 15 or 20 pages.

We’ve discovered just such a tool. It’s the One-Page Business Case (OPBC)—a concise document that quickly and concisely sells or kills a new product or service concept, saving valuable writing and reading time for all parties involved

A: We've run into this issue many times as we start projects with new clients and interview companies about their product planning process. It resurfaced just last week during a Software Association of Oregon (SOA) panel discussion titled "Secrets of Successful Product Launches" moderated by PI's Dorian Simpson. An audience member asked the panel to describe how to get engineering and marketing working together. The panel's reply was right on track with what makes this and all relationships work:

"Creating a framework gets you to 80% of the decision"
